Powerline Communications Ltd is a New Zealand company formed by John Rutherford, a communications and patent lawyer from that country who achieved patents on powerline communications (PLC) a decade ago, in several countries.
Work has continued over the years to a point where the technology has become a commercial reality following the facilitation of the first commercial system in Germany in 2001, which now has tens of thousands of customers receiving Internet data through their electricity outlets. Similar systems in other countries are being instituted and the technology has matured, especially since the recommendations of the International Telecommunications Union have been formulated as to radio frequency use and a European Standard has been promulgated by ETSI.
The ability to use existing cabling in residential and business premises of a higher communications capability than the twisted pair copper wires of the telcos so as to provide communications at every power outlet, when also supplemented by wireless connectivity, offers a compelling service for use by both content providers and customers.
While communications companies have failed or struggled under the weight of having to provide new cabling or long range wireless services, suddenly there is available a cost effective killer application as compared with the cost of laying new external long distance and internal Ethernet cabling or endeavouring to load more data on to fine copper wires of the incumbent telephone companies.
Powerline Communications Ltd is a well resourced. It has the most experienced technical backing plus intellectual property protection, that have placed it in the forefront of this emerging industry. It is in a position to implement PLC services world wide and supply equipment and content through its strategic alliance partners, which include international luminaries in the manufacturing, and service aspects of PLC.
